Event Spaces for Community Members

The physical space at Morris Library has been designed, in part, to enhance and extend the Library as a center of academic community and campus life: intellectual, social, cultural, and creative. To this end, a variety of spaces have been created.Request by non-affiliated groups may also be considered as identified in this policy.

This document explains the policies related to room usage at Morris Library. In all areas, exceptions will be considered. All requests for exceptions and special permission must be received in writing and granted in writing by the Office of the Dean of Library Affairs.

Eligibility for Non-Affiliate Groups

The following groups are eligible to request rooms and space at Morris Library.

  1. Organization or units that are organizationally part of the University. Examples: academic colleges and departments, research centers, University business/operational centers (e.g., Information Technology, Physical Plant, Financial Aid, University Museum, etc.)
  2. Organizations or groups affiliated with the University. Examples: Alumni Association, Faculty Club, RSO’s, Friends of Morris Library, SIU Foundation, etc.
  3. Other organizations, especially non-profit organizations, whose primary mission and intended event or meeting is instructional or research-related and which may contribute to or enhance the academic or cultural life of the campus.

The Library will give priority to requests from affiliated groups (1 and 2 above); requests from other organizations will be considered but will be subject to availability, ease of scheduling/ accommodation to library hours, and relevance of the proposed activity to the mission of the Library as a center of academic community and campus life.

Room Options and Fees

Morris Library has a number of rooms of different sizes and capabilities available to rent for SIUC affiliates and off-campus groups.
 

First Floor

  • Capacity: 150; most space is standing
  • Description:
    • Round, open space good for receptions
    • High ceiling (22'), elegant carpet
    • End tables and seating around perimeter
    • Adjacent to the Hall of Presidents & Chancellors and the John C. Guyon Auditorium
  • Media/technology capabilities:
    • No installed media/technology, but outside installation and setup possible
    • Sound is possible with portable speaker system
    • Presentation technology would be difficult
    • Power outlets along walls
  • Food and drink acceptable per the library Food & Drink policy
    • Small kitchenette facilties in adjacent Hall of Presidents & Chancellors
  • Room charges
    • $40/hr.
    • $150/half day
    • $300/full day

 

john c guyon auditoriumJohn C. Guyon Auditorium

  • Capacity: 200; theater-syle seating
  • Description:
    • Appropriate for events such as speakers, movies, and small panel discussions
    • Space for speaker (or small panel of speakers )at front, but no raised platform
    • Seats on slight incline for good sight lines
  • Media/technology capabilities:
    • Full media and computer capabilities including surround sound
    • Three projectors: One for single screen display (movies); two for contrasting, independently-controlled dual projection
  • Covered drinks only acceptable per the library Food & Drink policy.
    • No food allowed.
  • Room charges:
    • $60/hr.
    • $200/half day
    • $400/full day

 

hall of presidents and chancellorsHall of Presidents & Chancellors

  • Capacity: 100-125
  • Description:
    • Limited availability for rentals
    • Elegant, long, open rectangular space for dinners or receptions
    • All tables and chairs would require delivery and setup
  • Media/technology capabilities:
    • Speaker-quality sound system installed
    • Computer-based projection possible with outside installation and setup
  • Food and drink acceptable per the library Food & Drink policy
    • Small kitchenette facility available
  • Room charges:
    • $80/hr.
    • $250/half day
    • $500/full day

Special note: The Hall of Presidents & Chancellors is a special room that has meaning to the University beyond the space itself. Requests for this space will be granted for events which are appropriate to the setting or complement the history and value of these spaces.

 

Third Floor

  • Capacity: 14 seated; 30-40 standing
  • Description:
    • Elegant and historically-themed room for small meetings and receptions
    • Meeting table and chairs
    • Lecture podium
    • Various pieces of historical interest
  • Media/technology capabilities:
    • Computer-based podium with internet connectivity
    • Projection display and external speakers
    • Sympodium (speaker) for annotation
  • Food and drink acceptable with permission per the library Food & Drink policy
    • Small kitchenette facility in adjacent room
  • Room charges:
    • $60/hr.
    • $200/half day
    • $400/full day

Special note: The DeJarnett American Heritage Room is a special room that has meaning to the University beyond the space itself. Requests for this space will be granted for events which are appropriate to the setting or complement the history and value of these spaces.

  • Description:
    • Large conference room with dry erase board
    • Oval conference table and chairs
  • Media/technology capabilities:
    • Projection display and external speakers
    • Wired internet connectivity
  • Food and drink acceptable with permission per the library Food & Drink policy
    • Small prep sink and counter space in room
  • Room charges:
    • $40/hr.
    • $150/half day
    • $300/full day

 

 

Seventh Floor

room 752, classroomClassrooms 752 & 754

  • Capacity: 24 each
  • Description:
    • Can use rooms individually or remove central wall for a capacity of 48
    • Classroom-style room with tables and chairs that can be reconfigured
    • Great for workshops, symposiums, and break-out sessions
  • Media/technology capabilities:
    • Speaker-quality sound system installed
    • Lecture podium
    • Computer-based projection with two screens
    • Plenty of whiteboard space
  • Food and drink acceptable with permission per the library Food & Drink Policy
    • There is no kitchenette facility on this floor
  • Room charges (per room):
    • $40/hr.
    • $150/half day
    • $300/full day
